CELEBRATING UNSUNG CLIMATE LEADER : BENITHA BOMPENDJU

For this year's International Women's Day, Surge Africa is celebrating unsung women like Benitha, a climate advocate from DR Congo who refuses to stay silent. Witnessing deforestation and floods ravage her community, she launched awareness campaigns to help communities near logging concessions demand accountability and to lead difficult conversations about shifting away from harmful practices like slash-and-burn agriculture. By bringing women, youth, and men together in dialogue, Benitha is proving that lasting change starts when communities reflect and act together. This is her story.

Pour cette Journée internationale des femmes, Surge Africa célèbre des femmes exceptionnelles comme Benitha, une activiste climatique de la RDC qui refuse de rester silencieuse. Témoin des inondations et de la déforestation qui ravagent sa communauté, elle a lancé des campagnes de sensibilisation pour aider les communautés vivant près des concessions forestières à exiger des comptes, tout en menant des discussions difficiles sur l'abandon des pratiques néfastes, telles que l'agriculture sur brûlis. En réunissant femmes, jeunes et hommes autour du dialogue, Benitha prouve qu'un changement durable commence lorsque les communautés réfléchissent et agissent ensemble. Voici son histoire

What inspired you to take action in the fight against climate change, and what keeps you motivated despite the challenges?

Qu'est-ce qui vous a inspiré à agir dans la lutte contre le changement climatique, et qu'est-ce qui vous motive à continuer malgré les défis ?

What inspired me most is the effects climate change has had and continues to have in my community. The disruption of seasons, the scarcity of animal species, and the flooding in our areas are all clear signs. Seeing all of this, I realised that this climate change story is real and not a lie. Through all this, I feel I must get involved to educate my community on ways to fight this scourge.

Ce qui m'a beaucoup plus inspiré est les effets qui ont et continu de causer le changement climatique dans mon milieu. La perturbation des saisons, la rareté des espèces animales et les inondations dans nos milieux. En voyant tout ça, je me suis dit que cette histoire du changement climatique est réelle et non un mensonge. Et dans tout ça, je dois m'impliquer pour sensibiliser ma communauté aux mécanismes de lutte contre ce fléau.

Share the project or initiative you’ve led that has significantly impacted your community

We conducted a project to raise awareness among communities living near logging and agricultural concessions, encouraging them to monitor the activities of agro-industrial and logging companies to preserve untouched forests and ensure that exploitation follows the norms and techniques set by the Congolese state. Deforestation and forest degradation caused by these commercial activities are major drivers of forest loss and contribute to climate change.

However, the community's own practices, such as slash-and-burn shifting agriculture, also add to climate change if mitigation measures are not followed.

In summary, this was the core of our awareness-raising efforts within the framework of the project we carried out in previous years.

Nous avons mené un projet dans le cadre de ce même fléau pour sensibiliser la communauté riveraine des concessions d'exploitation forestière.Et agricole de veiller sur l'exploitation qui se fait par les agro-industriels et forestiers pour la sauvegarde des forêts intactes et que l'exploitation respecte les normes et techniques mises en place par l'état congolais. La déforestation et la dégradation des forêts faites par ces moteurs commerciaux de déforestation, est parmi les activités qui détruisent la forêt et nous entraîne le changement climatique.

Mais aussi les activités que mènent la communauté elle même, comme par exemple l'agriculture itinérante surbrilis amène aussi le changement climatique si les mécanismes d'alténuation ne sont pas respectés.

Voilà un peu, en résumé, ce à quoi a porté notre sensibilisation (travail) dans le cadre du projet que nous avons exécuté les années précédentes.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your work, and how have you been able to overcome them?

Quels sont les principaux défis auxquels vous faites face dans votre travail et comment avez-vous réussi à les surmonter?

To overcome political interference and community resistance, we intensified continuous awareness-raising among all stakeholders—including the state, local communities, and logging companies—until they began to understand and embrace more sustainable practices.

Pour surmonter les défis liés aux interférences politiques et à la résistance des communautés à abandonner leurs pratiques traditionnelles, nous avons intensifié la sensibilisation continue auprès de toutes les parties prenantes, y compris l'État, les communautés locales et les entreprises forestières et agricoles.

How do you engage and empower other women and young people to take action on climate and environmental issues?

Comment engagez-vous et responsabilisez-vous les autres femmes et les jeunes à agir sur les questions climatiques et environnementales?

Women are, first and foremost, a major asset to achieving any goal because they are the foundation of the home; within them, the entire nation is born. And we must not forget that when women get involved, everything moves. Based on this, we have greatly increased awareness of the importance of women in society, the need to change their traditional practices, and the need to manage our forests rationally and sustainably. We have done this by creating focus groups and group work sessions (women, youth, men) to reflect together and formulate recommendations that must ultimately be respected.

La femme constitue tout d'abord un atout majeur pour atteindre un objectif car la femme est le socle de la maison, en elle nait toute la nation et faut pas oublier que si la femme s'engage tout bouge. Sur base de ça, nous avons beaucoup plus multiplier la sensibilisation sur l'importance de la femme dans une société, pourquoi faudrait-il changé ses anciennes pratiques, l'importance de gérer rationnellement ou durablement nos forêts et tout ça en créant des focus groupe, des travaux en groupes (femmes, jeunes, hommes) pour essayer de réfléchir ensemble et formulé les recommandations qui doivent à la longue être respectées.
