Agriculture in Nigeria, and particularly in Kano State, faces multiple, intersecting challenges linked to soil degradation, biodiversity loss, health crises, and economic dependency on imported chemical inputs. Over the past three decades, Kano has transitioned from a vibrant center of indigenous seed diversity and sustainable agricultural practices to a system increasingly dominated by synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and recently, genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

This shift has brought short-term productivity benefits in some cases but has also led to serious negative consequences for farmer health, food sovereignty, and environmental sustainability. Against this backdrop, the Practical Agroecology Training for Farmers and Stakeholder Engagement was conceived and implemented to build the capacity of farmers to reclaim ecological farming practices, strengthen resilience, and reduce dependence on chemicals and corporate-controlled seed systems.
