Announcing the Climate Reporting Gap Fellows

Surge Africa and One World Media are proud to announce the six Nigerian journalists selected for the Climate Reporting Gap Fellowship, a new initiative to support original stories on climate and energy transition across Nigeria.

The Fellowship aims to strengthen climate journalism by enabling inclusive, data-driven, and community-centered reporting. Through mentorship, editorial guidance, and financial support, fellows will report original stories exploring issues ranging from the hidden costs of lithium extraction, to Nigeria’s ban on solar panel imports, and the booming charcoal export industry despite deforestation policies.

One story will follow climate loans to uncover who benefits and who is left behind, while another will reveal how global energy transition promises collide with the daily realities of farmers struggling to feed the nation amid rising climate pressures.

Together, their reporting will map out the challenges and opportunities for delivering a just transition, while unpacking the growth of renewable energy, systemic distrust, and policy contradictions that shape Nigeria’s path forward.

“The Climate Reporting Gap Fellowship is designed to explore the disconnect between climate policy, energy transition and lived experiences,” said Dr Vivienne Francis, Director of One World Media. “By equipping journalists with the tools, mentorship, and resources, we aim to ensure that the realities of those most affected by the crisis are heard.”

“Covering stories about the climate crisis humanises the issues and reveals how global policies translate into real impacts on people and communities. Through such stories, we can hold power accountable and centre affected communities as we reimagine a climate transition that heals the planet without harming its people,” said Adesewa Olofinko, one of the six journalists selected for the Fellowship.
